It's finally cooled off and we can venture out during the day without melting

What are some interesting day trip routes/destinations in Central TX? Went to Llano earlier this year which had a few historical buildings/sites and easy access to the river for fishing, wading or nature watching. Salado is a boutique/antique shoppers paradise - great for holiday shopping. The best Octoberfest is in Fredricksburg (New Braunfels is too many people). Any other faves?
